Secret Garden Ideas Inspired by the Easter Season

February 4, 2026 · In: Garden

Summary

This is a post about secret garden ideas that are inspired by Easter.

If you’re obsessed with building up your own enchanting garden, these secret garden ideas inspired by Easter can help you get started or continue to grow. There’s something quite mesmerizing about a curious, little oasis with winding paths and colorful blooms that greet you year after year. And I think Easter is the perfect time to dream about flowers and lovely little things.

Growing a secret garden that’s got cottage garden vibes is my ultimate goal and, if you share that goal, let’s get to it!

Designing this door was such a fun project. If you have a secret garden, you need a secret garden door!

As a kid, I remember reading “The Secret Garden” and just loving the garden “treasure hunt” of discovering which buds were popping up and blooming. That story stayed with me. And, while I probably would never live in an old English manor with endless grounds to explore, I could spruce up my old, American one-story to have its own flowers.

My love for gardening actually started when I moved to my current house. After learning how to plant a few things like hostas and, well, more hostas, this love became even more unhinged.

Secret Garden Whimsy

That’s when the Secret Garden Door was born. I thought if I had a secret garden door, my secret garden would somehow magically unfold. It is unfolding, but magically? I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

I’d love to know more about your garden? What you have planted, what your dreams are for planting more. Let me know in the comments!

For now, let’s explore how Easter can help us with our secret gardens.

This post is all about secret garden ideas inspired by beautiful Easter.

Colors: Purple & White

Purple and white are some of the main colors of Easter. They have spiritual significance and they’re also beautiful! I love adding these colors to my secret garden.

Purple Flowers

Purple is such a creative and whimsical color, something that a proper secret garden can’t have enough of (in my humble opinion)!

The color’s richness and vibrancy bring enchantment, wonderment, and imagination.

I think of royalty gliding across a ruby red entrance, wearing crowns bedazzled with jewels.

I think of the beloved Grimace character and birthday parties at McDonald’s.

I think of my sweet grape hair barrettes I had as a kid.

So wondrous!

And there are so many amazing purple flowers to try! Some are easier than others, so I’ll tell you what’s stayed alive in my garden!

What’s Stayed Alive In My Garden So Far:

  • Nantucket Blue hydrangeas that can be blue, purple, periwinkle, and pink!
  • Common lilacs: They smell lovely!
  • Clematis
  • Sedum: purple-y to reddish pink tones; I also have yellow Angelina sedum, which is awesome.
  • Wild violets: These are native purple, periwinkle, and white flowers that grow naturally in my yard and lots of other people’s yards! They act as early spring support for many pollinators and a host plant for frittilary butterflies. They’re also edible! I keep them as groundcover and just remove any that fight over space with other plants. We all try to get along in my garden! Still working on that, though🤣
  • Redbud trees: Oh, do I love me some redbud trees! They’re such gorgeous, understory trees that support a variety of pollinators and wildlife. Their purple springtime buds are just delightful. They’re also super easy to transplant seedlings and are very resilient.

White Flowers

White flowers symbolize purity, grace, and innocence…a childlike wonder that’s embraced at Easter and in the secret garden.

In the storybook written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, nature stirs mystery and curiosity in a young girl through the budding blooms and awakening of spring. To find a way into the secret garden meant finding hope, happiness, and healing for her ailing playmate.

And isn’t Easter about those very things?

Petals of white might create that same fascination and joy for you in your secret garden!

White Flowers Thriving In My Garden:

  • Fuzzy deutzia flowering shrub
  • White coneflower: I’m still learning about these that are apparently easy, but more to come on that!
  • Lilacs
  • Catnip
  • Lemon balm
  • Hosta: These flowers pop up later in the summertime.

Bunnies, Chicks & Lambs

Easter highlights the cutest critters: bunnies, chicks, and lambs! These gentle guys can inspire a secret garden that supports wildlife: things that they can eat (as long as it’s not ALL the hostas, bunnies!) and places where they can hide and snuggle up at night.

Also, your secret garden could have decorative touches that are animal-themed! A whimsical stone statue of a bunny or a gentle, little lamb will marvelously transition from Easter time to summertime.

Sharing our gardens with animals is a compassionate gesture, and a garden created with love just seems like the perfect connection to Easter.

Garden of Gethsemane

A beautiful, but sorrowful historic site where Jesus prayed with an anguished spirit, the Garden of Gethsemane’s ancient, enrapturing olive trees might inspire your own natural place to seek peace.

I like how Jesus sought refuge in the garden and in nature, instead of a man-made shelter…but a shelter literally made by Him! (Let that marvel your mind for a moment.)

In some of the darkest hours of that eve, prayers were whispered through the twisting trees, lifted by the night wind, and carried up to the starlit heavens. (At least, that’s how I imagine it.)

This makes me think that the garden not only brings joy and light, but it’s there for us in the eventide, in the hours when it’s truly hard to see in front of us, when we need to rest our busy minds and calm our troubled hearts.

Secret Garden Ideas We Can Glean From the Garden Of Gethsemane:

  • Enchanting olive trees to meander through and lose yourself in thought
  • Large rocks that can be natural benches for the garden
  • Taller grasses and a free-flowing landscape
  • Gentle simplicity
  • A place to go for solitude, while sitting under the stars
  • A refuge to talk to God or loved ones

Easter Garden

An Easter Garden is a creative DIY display people can make to celebrate their faith. You might also hear it referred to as a Resurrection Garden.

What I love about this DIY craft is that you can find items at home and in your secret garden! Use your imagination and love for God and nature to inspire you!

If you’re sharing the Bible story with a child, I think an Easter Garden is also a delightful way to teach a love for nature and gardening.

Easter Garden Supplies:

  • Bowl, basket, or other container
  • Twigs or small sticks to create crosses
  • Small planter to represent the empty tomb
  • Purple or white ribbon
  • Natural elements like greenery, succulents, flowers, moss, pebbles, and stones
  • Teeny tiny mini Bible or a handwritten Bible verse

Lilies

Lilies are synonymous with Easter and can offer meaning from purity to remembrance. Many churches display peace lily plants during the holy season.

And there are many varieties of lilies you can choose for your secret garden!

I have the classic orange daylilies, plus some new pinks and yellows. If you need to fill up a space relatively fast, daylilies multiply year after year. My orange variety grows so much that I dig up some of them and give to neighbors. They also transplant very easily. Almost too easily!

Orange daylilies are a little like gremlins. They multiply quickly! But that just means you can share them with friends!

Make sure your plants are pet-friendly!

As always, when choosing indoor or outdoor plants, make sure you find those that are safe for your pup or kitty cat. Check out the AKC’s recommendations on how to build a dog-friendly garden.

I’m learning how to create new plants from current plants, too, so I’ll share any info I learn as I go. Thank you so much for your kind words. I love taking pics of flowers and growing flowers! I’m hoping your garden brings you lots of joy this year!🩷

When I see a whimsical field or clouds that look like animals or an old shade tree untouched by the modern world, I can find my childhood again. I remember the aliveness of being in the fresh air and kicking through the leaves.

I grew up in a country home for the first decade o I grew up in a country home for the first decade of my life. I was always outside exploring, stretching my imagination, and even taking pictures of flowers back then. On a camera with film, y’all📸😎

Nature was second nature to me, something I just lived in and experienced.

And now I think how amazing it was to grow up among miles of trees and babbling creeks and SO many lightning bugs.

I remember how Mother Earth made me feel and now know how much that has influenced me today.

This is why I write about nature and being stewards of our planet because it not only matters how it makes us feel, but it’s everything.
