Zero-Waste Makeup Sticks That Reduce Your Carbon Footprint: Part One

October 16, 2024 · In: Beauty, Cruelty Free, Eco Friendly, Gifts, Lifestyle, Sustainability

Summary

Learn about my new favorite zero-waste, earth-friendly makeup!

Do you have a favorite lip color, concealer, or blush that you love, but you’d love it even more if it were zero-waste makeup and not cased in plastic? If you’re into the environment like I am, you probably cringe at all the compacts, lipstick tubes, and eye shadow palettes you’ve thrown out over the years. But we’re about to change all that!

Hello, you!

This page contains affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you make a purchase through my affiliate link at no extra cost to you.

I’m in my middle-age era and I’m STILL on the quest for the best makeup. Has it ever been easy being Gen X?!

As I’ve gotten older, I no longer consider makeup that tests on animals. And lucky for all of us, there are LOTS of makeup choices that choose compassion for our furry friends first. Cruelty-free are the brands for me!

And since I’ve figured that out, I’m now also trying to find products that don’t crinkle my wrinkles or make me look crackly or creepy or extra cruddy!

Then, there’s the whole waste thing. I cannot stand throwing plastic tubes, bottles, and cases into the landfill. Unbeknownst to many (but now not to you, sweetie!) there are places like Nordstrom, God bless them, that will take your empty containers and recycle them. And I LOVE that.

But even better, you can get marvelous makeup housed in ZERO PLASTIC. Yeah, that’s right.

That means their packaging is make of PAPER, so, afterwards, you can recycle or toss in your beautiful compost bin.

Awesome Zero-Waste Makeup Sticks

This is a photo of the axiology makeup stick label that says, "The beauty industry creates 120 billion units of packaging waste every year. We're happy there are cool people lik you who care about our planet and shop plastic-free!"

I found Axiology through what I like to call my “obsessive curiosity” over searching for animal-friendly and earth-friendly items and ideas.

We became instant email friends and, soon, they graciously sent me some makeup to try. Thank you, Axiology beauties!

Zero-Waste Makeup Sticks I’m Trying & Loving

  • Vegan Balm in Peppermint
  • Vegan Balm in Unscented
  • Multi-Stick Color Cream in Grounded
  • Multi-Stick Tinted Dew in Infinite
  • Multi-Stick Tinted Dew in The Goodness
  • The Original Zero Waste Multi-Use Crayon in Strawberry + Cherry

About Axiology

This woman-run, BIPOC-owned makeup company is cruelty-free, 100% vegan, plastic-free, and palm-oil-free, with products handmade in the United States.

Their founder, Ericka, began making her own lipsticks right at her kitchen counter after realizing a lot of the makeup brands she was using tested on animals. Once she had perfected her cruelty-free, vegan lip colors, Ericka started selling on Etsy.

As Axiology grew, they looked into removing plastic from their packaging, thus removing waste from the landfills and ocean.

Today, all of their boxes are created from island trash located in Bali. This helps remove harmful plastics from the sea and turn it all into something pretty in pink…and red and peach!

Axiology Beauty

And if I haven’t hooked you with the zero plastic and zero testing on animals (but of course I have!), you’ve got to love the individual color names and sets like Loyalty, Brave, Elusive, Golden Hour, and Malibu Magic. I especially love when your color match aligns with a name that fits you!

I took the color match quiz and my results were…

This is a photo of my color matches with Axiology's clean cosmetics.

Light Set

  • Light Shape Stick
  • Devotion Color Cream
  • Peace Tinted Dew

Earth Berries

  • Brave, Infinite, Grounded Multi-Stick Bundle

Out of office: Electric Berry meets Watermelon pop!

  • Frosting, Raspberry, Watermelon Balmie Trio Set

I like LIGHT. I like BERRIES. And I like being OUT OF OFFICE, so this all works for me.

Balmies or Multi-Sticks?

If Balmies appeal to you, but so do Multi-Sticks, which ones do you choose?

Here’s a brief beauty breakdown because decisions are hard for me, too:

Balmies:

  • Matte feel
  • Perfect for those with oilier skin
  • Great for those who use face oils
  • 9 naturally-derived ingredients
  • For lids, lips, and cheeks!

Multi-Sticks:

  • Glides on smoother and cleaner
  • Nice with drier skin
  • Hydrating quality
  • 10 naturally-derived ingredients
  • Certified Organic
  • For lids, lips, and cheeks!

Vegan Balm in “Peppermint” & “unscented”

This is a GREAT lip balm. It glides on smooth and feels very hydrating. The Peppermint scent is super mild and not all overly tingly like some lip balms I’ve tried before. It’s not sticky or greasy or clumpy. It just does what it’s supposed to do…make your lips feel silky soft!

I think dudes would like it, too.

In fact, I had the resident dude here try it and he liked it. He wanted the package to come in “blue,” but I told him to not worry because pink was also his color!

Pro Tip: If you’re anything like me and lose lip balms all the dang time, plan on purchasing a few of these zero plastic pretties––one for the purse, one for the car, one for a random drawer where you’ll probably find it as a bonus treasure approximately two to four months later.

Multi-stick color cream in “Grounded”

This is one of my favorite sustainable skincare brands, Axiology, on a beautiful Wedgwood plate.
This plate is from the Wedgwood Butterfly Bloom collection. I LOVE these plates.
They also have a teapot they’ve been luring me in with for years.

“Grounded” is a luscious, earthy, berry hue that I feel would look good on most skin types. I’m pretty fair and the color felt natural for me, but also kind of festive for fall. It could go with an oversized sweater or a last-minute attempt to look “put-together” in my video chat pajama pants. Or better yet, something sumptuous like satin or velvet!

Storytime: One of my first friends in Kansas City gave me some advice I haven’t forgotten in 20 years. After a fun date where she draped herself in a whole velvet wardrobe, she felt her fashion choices made ALL the difference. Because who doesn’t look good and feel fine in lavish fabrics??? My friend later advised, “Girl, get you some velvet!”

I apply the Grounded Multi-Stick Color Cream on my lips, lids, and cheeks! As you use more product, just push up the base of the tube like a Push-Up Popsicle.

Also, these makeup sticks come in 13 different shades…so there’s one for YOU!

That’s a Zero-Waste Wrap

In my next post, I’ll give you all the details on Tinted Dew Multi-Sticks and Balmie crayons for eyes, lips, and cheeks! Please stay tuned for the second part of this Axiology series coming soon!

Trees: the original shadies! Today, on World Envir Trees: the original shadies! Today, on World Environment Day, I hope one of your favorite trees comes to mind. What does it look like? Is it a big, shady oak or a magnolia bursting with flowers? Is it from your childhood or the park down the street?

I’ve always been obsessed with trees and am typically taking pics of them like an overly eager tourist. It never gets old to me. (Maybe for people around me, but not me!)

Trees are so important for our planet, from the air we breathe to the homes they provide for our furry and feathery friends. 🐿️🦉I just love them! 🩷

Thanks, trees, for your shade, protection, and beauty! 🌲🌴🌳

When I worked at a bank out of college, one of my fellow coworker friends told me I wasn’t soggy, meaning I was always smiling and chipper (annoying 21-year-old, that was me!) compared to our soggy workmate (who had lived a bit longer than we had and deserved the soggy status).

Now that I’m older, I can get A LOT soggier, but I also know flowers still grow even in the toughest of times. Which is sunshine for my soul☀️🏖️🌈🦄🦋

Hope you feel loved today whatever life forecasts. Because you’re worth all the sunny days🩷🌈☀️
