Why Give Eco-Friendly Christmas Gifts?
- Your best friend is sustainably-minded and would appreciate an eco-friendly choice.
- Your sister-in-law literally has it all.
- Your dad said, “Don’t get me anything!” (Nothing IS very eco-friendly!)🤣
- Your boyfriend could make better style choices, so you lead him to cute vegan clothing.
- Your dog already has 17 baskets of toys. Time to pretend they’re new and gift again!
- You’re trying to reduce your own carbon footprint.
- Sometimes eco-friendly is budget-friendly, too.
- You want to share awareness for our climate (but not in a smug way!), plus support brands and products that prioritize the environment and animal welfare.
Should You Preach to Others About Being Eco-Friendly?
Hmmmmm…great question! Do you like these people?
Here’s how I shop eco-friendly gifts by level of difficulty:
Lowest difficulty: If I know they’d love something eco-friendly or sustainable, I start there. Then, I try to find eco items on their wish list or what I think they’d like. These are the easy ones!
Slightly higher difficulty, but still not bad: If they don’t care either way, I’ll think of stuff they like first, then see if I can find something in that category that’s more eco-friendly.
Highest difficulty to the point of being a real pain in the…(fill in the blank): If they snub their noses at my climate awareness and activism, then I unfriend them. Just kidding! Not sure if I can totally unfriend my brother!🤣
In this case, I might make a list of things they like or want, then choose the least climate destructive of them all.
Keep A Running List of Gift Ideas For Friends & Family
Overall, think of the person FIRST; what they like, what lights them up, what they talk about. Then, once you have some ideas, go from there. It’s more important to show you care about who they are, instead of getting them something just because you like it.
In their world, that gift will end up as superfluous junk because we usually give away stuff we don’t want or can’t use. And you know your highest difficulty person will be snooping around for the gift receipt or worse: chucking it into the landfill! Probably no responsible donating or recycling on their watch!
By giving them what they really want, it’ll ultimately cut down on waste. Plus, it’s just the thoughtful thing to do.
Because everyone matters, because everyone is a gift…
This list isn’t only for eco-friendly Christmas gifts. It’s also inspiration for eco-friendly Hanukkah gifts, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, La Novena, Festivus, and any other holiday celebration that brings you peace and joy. Everyone’s included here!

Zero-Waste Makeup

This versatile, zero-plastic, vegan, and cruelty-free makeup is woman-founded and owned. In addition to the company’s dedication to sustainability and compassion for animals, their makeup is so easy to use.
One multi-stick is perfect for cheeks, lips, and eyelids, plus you can just blend in with your fingers…no brushes required! I write more about this makeup here!
Plant-Based Face Cream in Gorgeous Amber Glass Jar
If you love someone who loves beauty products, this natural, vegan, and cruelty-free moisturizer is a great pick. It’s creamy, non-greasy, and comes in a variety of lovely scents.
One of the other things that sold me on this face cream is the packaging. It comes in a beautiful amber-hued glass car with an aluminum lid. Which can be recycled or repurposed!
These small glass jars can be used as:
- Candle votives
- Tiny planters
- Storage for paper clips, rubber bands, small nails and screws
- Mini vases
- Pen caddies for your desk or brush holders for your artist studio
- Homemade lotions and balms
- Jewelry or trinket dishes
- Ponytail holder storage
- Toothbrush cup
This brand also carries lip balm, body lotion, and baby products.
Shampoo & Conditioner Bars
Shampoo and conditioner bars are so much better for the environment. And before you start to feel bad about your plastic bottle, this isn’t a lecture! We’re all guilty of wanting our favorite shampoos that come cased in plastic.
However, now there are some better options, like hair wash that looks like a bar of soap, but is actually shampoo or conditioner. This brand makes a really solid product, is easy to use, and lathers well. You can even buy a caddy that’s made with compostable bamboo and cornstarch to keep your bars from sliding off your shower shelf.
I also really like this brand: Their shampoo and conditioner bars come in a tiny travel tin! The tin can be repurposed after you’re done. This one’s a great lather-er, too!
Also, this type of gift is probably for someone you know well and/or someone who loves trying new eco-friendly beauty products. You never want to insinuate, “Your hair needs help!”
The Plastic Conundrum: My Two Cents That You Didn’t Ask For
If you’re not ready to go full-on with shampoo and conditioner bars, consider adding them into the rotation. You might love your current product, but maybe you can make it last longer by alternating with a bar every other week, which cuts down on plastic usage.
For example, I love Vegamour shampoo. I feel like it’s made my hair healthier, plus it’s cruelty-free and contains quality ingredients. But what I don’t love is the plastic bottle. This is one of the challenges of wanting to be more eco-friendly.
This is why I also say it’s okay to be realistic and do what you can. You might be able to swap out another product to balance out the plastic you haven’t been able to give up yet.
And let’s just say this: No one person should carry the weight of the world alone. On many levels, we have to buy what is provided and what we can afford. And companies have a major responsibility in all of this plastic production, too. Like, MAJOR. Yeah, Companies, what’s the deal?!
Swedish Dishcloths
The cute, little cook in your life might enjoy an alternative to paper towels: Swedish dishcloths! If you’ve used these yourself, you know they’re pretty cool. Reusable MANY times, dishwasher-safe, and compostable, these cloths can help you reduce your paper towel usage. Some people have even fully quit their dependence on paper towels, which is amazing!
With so many colorful and pretty patterns, these dishcloths are a unique and thoughtful gift. This set of Swedish dishcloths has adorable fruity designs that would even made the Scrooge smile. (I mean, maybe.)
Snazzy Shopping Totes
A set of grocery totes aren’t just for picking up your favorite snacks…they can be used for travel, beach bags, and storage. I used them as welcome gift bags for my wedding.
Recycled Glass Handcrafted Vase
Do you know someone who has a problematic weakness for home décor? (Other than me!)
Recycled glass art tends to have those subtle imperfections that make it so unique and charming. (I have many imperfections, too, but I’m not so sure they’re unique and charming!)
Taking one beautiful glass piece and turning it into something else is such a creative and earth-conscious idea, so if you can choose these items first, good on you!
This handblown glass vase is stunning and comes in many colors and I want them all! Though, if I had to choose (and I do!), I think the aubergine, aqua, and raspberry colors are my favorites.
I also read a little about the company on their website. They feel a responsibility to create with the earth in mind and I love that.
Reusable Makeup Remover Cloths
For travel or home use, these makeup remover cloths only require water to remove all makeup, including mascara.
Surely, you know someone who loves to get gussied up, but also loves to unwind after an eventful day!
I’m eager to try these makeup cloths myself. I’ve heard really good things!
Vegan Leather Purse, Wallet, or Backpack
The tender hearts in your life will appreciate your choice of a cruelty-free, vegan, and climate positive purse. This brand is not only stylish and contemporary, but they use zero materials from animals and employ carbon offsetting to package and ship responsibly.
I have a few of these bags and they’re just darling. Two of the qualities I love about this company’s merchandise is the soft, vegan leather (not animal leather) and the fresh colors.
No matter which purse style you choose, I believe supporting brands that reject animal cruelty, embrace compassion for sentient beings, and respect our earth are the best.
Artisan Clothing & Bags
Because of my longtime affinity for buying way too much (something I’ve been changing for a while!), I randomly happened upon this breezy sundress on T.J. Maxx’s site. Of course, I bought it. And since then, it’s become one of my favorite dresses.

Photo by my sister-in-law, I think!
The fabric is light, it doesn’t wrinkle, and the details are unique. Plus, it’s long, so it can cover my mosquito-ravaged legs.
The maker of my dress is called America & Beyond and, when I researched further, I found out their items are made by skilled, Fair Trade artisans in environmentally-advanced studios. What does that mean, you say?
The company has installed recycled water pumps and they’ve powered their space with solar energy and natural light. Every piece they make is also created in-house.
From enchanting dresses to dazzling bags, I’d describe their style as boho, whimsical, and never, ever ordinary. If you know someone like this, this is their store!

Stainless Steel Drinking Straws
Maybe your friend THINKS they have it all, but do they have a reusable straw?
I love these stainless steel drinking straws with silicone tips. They collapse so you can pop in you pocket or purse. They also come with a carrying case that can be clipped to your bag, plus a teeny tiny cleaning brush! (They’re also dishwasher-safe for the top rack.) These stainless steel drinking straws also are styled in some cute colors, like coral, grape, and Caribbean blue. (Not the official color names, just what I see!)
Now, are you thinking, “Kat, do they function like my regular straw?”
I think they’re actually better! I’ve tried paper straws and wasn’t too impressed, but these function fluidly (heh, heh), are very smooth to drink with, and have no weird aftertaste. (Unless you never clean them then, dude, we’ve got bigger problems.)
Oh, and there’s an official Coke designed straw for the Coca-Cola collectors in your life! Very, very cute!
Ugh, Plastic Straws
I’m just as naughty as the rest of us when using plastic straws. I truly try to skip them at restaurants when I can catch the server before they bring the drinks. And I’m even trying to avoid them at fast food places. (I should be avoiding fast food places, in general, but we don’t have all day for EVERY one of my issues.)
But when we can remember to bring those reusable straws with us, even if it’s just a third of the time, it can help reduce our usage of plastic.
Straws made of plastic are so detrimental to our sea life. So, when we’re gifting these straws to our loved ones, we’re also giving back to the innocent creatures who roam Earth’s waters.
Funny Totes, Coin Purses, Tea Towels, Socks…and More!
If you know someone with a fabulous and quirky sense of humor, these gift ideas may be for you.
One of my FAVORITE places to look for gifts is Blue Q. This brand makes many of their products from 95% recycled material. Each item will typically have a hilarious self-expression statement, a bit of rogue advice, or an idiosyncratic, but sincere compliment.
Their humor is spot-on, relevant, and just gets people. It’s uncanny! There’s a little snark and a little sweetness. And, I dunno, they must have some strange intuition for people like me and all of my friends because I can always find something for, well, me and all of my friends!
It’s also a very affordable brand, so you won’t be out lots of cash, but you will be the coolest gift giver in the room.
Men’s & Women’s Vegan Clothing, Shoes & Bags, Including Briefcases and Diaper Bags Made From Recycled Plastic Bottles
There are a number of brands doing remarkable things with sustainability. Sometimes it can be a challenge to find them but, if you stick with me, I’ll find them!
And that means I take them seriously, too! When looking for gifts, I always look at responsible brands first, plus keep a list going for future presents for my pals.
This particular brand makes classic items with clean lines, but also adds in a little unique flair. I love their vegan leather purses, shoes, and jackets. They absolutely crush it AND prove you do not need to hurt animals to get that cool leather look.
Jewelry Made By a Climate Neutral Brand
If there’s one thing I know, it’s how to find more and more jewelry to obsess over. I LOVE jewelry. My favorite is vintage and antique, which is SUPER sustainable because you’re repurposing and not producing more.
However, if that’s not your friend’s style, there’s always the next best thing!
Ana Luisa is a brand I recently discovered that analyzes their greenhouse gas emissions and water usage, plus has been Climate Neutral Certified since 2021. This means they’ve incorporated measures to reverse their carbon footprint so that it’s essentially invisible.
I’d describe these jewelry pieces as understated, but with a lot of shine; contemporary, but with feminine, romantic curves. You can definitely find a pair of earrings or a ring for under $100, which might help with the ol’ budget.

Love all of these ideas! I do love a shampoo bar, although weirdly have never tried a conditioner bar so will add that to my Christmas list to try! I love that there’s no plastic waste as the amount of bottles/plastic on things is crazy!
Thank you, Katherine! Yes, the conditioner bars are nice, but sometimes I get them mixed up with the shampoo, so I need a better system for that! And I agree, the amount of plastic we produce and use is so overwhelming–it makes me worry all the time!🩷
