  • The petsitter you cannot live without
  • Your teen niece who “needs” all the accessories, lotions, and potions

Gift baskets are also great ideas to give FOR a group gift OR to give TO a group. This saves money in both instances!

When you and others chip in, you’re not footing the full bill. And when you give a nice basket to a family, you’re not having to buy individual gifts, which could save a lot in the long run (money and your sanity!).

How Much Should I Spend on My Gift Basket?

Spend what you can comfortably afford. There’s so much pressure to bankrupt ourselves with all the pretty things out there. How do I know this? Because I love all the pretty things out there!

But giving gifts is about caring, about meaning, and about connecting with those who are in your heart. You don’t need to spend a lot of money. It’s more about spending the time on something thoughtful, so that they know they’re loved.

My Favorite Types of Pre-Loved Gift Items

I’m sort of a germaphobe and that kind of anxiety is slightly challenging when you want to be sustainable and reuse! But if you’re like me and a little unsure of where all these pre-loved items have been, you can always choose items that are easy and safe to clean!

Glass, metals, dinner plates, and jewelry can be washed or gently wiped down. (Just make sure you research the proper cleaning solutions for delicate pieces.)

Pick items you’re comfortable with and just avoid the ones that make you nervous. For instance, used shoes make ME nervous. This is not the case for everyone and I’m pretty impressed with those people.

BUT, if your imagination can get the best of you, do what you can. The following are some of my pre-loved go-to’s:

  • Vintage or antique jewelry
  • Art
  • Home décor: figurines, bells, picture frames, mirrors
  • Mismatched dishes
  • Vases
  • Stained glass

Gift baskets can get out of control fast. This little structure can help you rein it in, while making a beautiful, curated assortment. Obviously, this is only a suggestion, but I find that parameters usually guide me so that I’m not buying everything I see!

Basic Gift Basket Elements:

  • Creative wrapping, if needed
  • 3-5 items
  • One statement piece with smaller gifts to support your theme
  • Greeting card or note with a meaningful handwritten message

Things to Remember When Making a Gift Basket

  • Costs can add up fast with gift baskets, so try to stay within your budget or get creative and make or repurpose some items.
  • Choose everything with zero-waste in mind, including the packaging or basket. I’ve included lots of creative ways to do that!
  • 3-5 items is plenty. You don’t need 25! Think quality and less consumption.
  • Customize your gifts for the person you love based on their interests, hobbies, wants, and needs.
  • Shop around for the best prices. You can also repurpose through The Buy Nothing Project, thrift, and find some fun things at the dollar store.
  • Make lists of what you might give beforehand. Try to imagine how it would look together in a basket.
